They knew the change would come, but they had never really taken it seriously. It was always present, like a soft breeze which slides through the trees. The fact the change would come was always evident, though, always felt. But, like that breeze, it was never considered as it was deemed not deserving of more than a passing thought. When the change finally did come, however, it was swift and they were completely unprepared. Of course, they knew of no way to prepare for it as they also knew, deep down, there was no way to respond to the inevitable.

And when that change came it no longer was as a slight breeze but as a strong gale, a tide which seemed to rend the very essence of their existence. Some, not many, held a faint glimmer of hope. Those who hoped only knew they had fulfilled their existence and lived according to their nature. When the change came, they saw it as a sign of acceptance, an acquiescence to their lives. They had been born and bred in the shadow of the trees in the forest and they had lived prudently, silently. They were unknowing of the joy they aroused around them, ignorant of the way in which they were regarded almost reverently by some. They only knew of their existence and their essence from the way in which they were seen and felt. They knew they had finally found the simple meaning of their lives. Simplicity also, they knew, can have its roots in Purpose.

Perhaps, they wondered, perhaps they would be allowed to live? Because of the way they had fulfilled their obligations to nature and destiny, perhaps they would be spared?

It was not to be, they knew. Still, some wondered. Some hoped.

Some others cursed their very existence. They felt they had just begun to live and swore at this twist of fate. This trick of their nature would take their lives, their existence, and hurl it down as if they were petty playthings of some unnatural being. They felt as though they were only now coming into their own.

Only now, they cried to the heavens, were they feeling the fibre, the fabric of their beings.

Only now, they cried to the trees, were they showing their true nature, their true existence. Their true colors.

Only now, they swore to the Earth as they fell, were they rejoicing in their lives.

Only now, they shrieked to the boy approaching, a small rake held over his shoulder. Only now were they living . . .
