Who Knew Washington Could Be So Funny?

Another beautiful day in America and this morning we awake to realize Washington, or at least the players, have a great sense of humor. You would think in the midst of an economic crisis (or 'crisis', depending on your point of view) and with two wars looming, the players would take things a little more seriously. I would think that as well. But, alas, it is not to be.

Here are a few chuckles from those in charge:

1) The News Conference

This one is actually not directed at any politician but at the Fox Network. You know, Fox, the channel which brings you the Simpsons and used to bring you the X-Files and Married With Children. In its wisdom, this channel decided to offer an alternative to Mr. Obama's state of the month speech. The alternative: a game show entitled 'Lie To Me'. I wonder if the message was lost on the players?

In defense of Fox, their cable news channel continues to cover Mr. Obama, as the other stations, 24/7. They don't like him very much, but they cover him. News is news, right? Or in this case, infatuation.

2) Washington Attacks New York

This was probably the stupidest thing to come out of Washington since, well, since the last stupid thing. Listen to the 911 calls and you realize New Yorkers are still shell-shocked. And rightfully so. This was an insensitive, idiotic thing to do. And yet, Washington's first response was to blame New York. Go figure.

3) The News Conference II

Mr. Obama has a great way of communicating with the masses. He also has a great way of communicating with reporters. Unfortunately, he doesn't really say much. It might just be me, but I really can't remember much of what he says twenty minutes after he's done. It's kind of like Chinese food in that way, isn't it?

4) Arlen Specter Switches Parties

Anyone who follows the employees in Washington knew this one was a long time coming. Specter has been a closet-Democrat for awhile now, and I give him credit for telling the truth about why he switched: he knows he won't win his re-election running on his values and what he believes, he will only win by switching parties and pandering. He should be thrown out, I know, yet you have to love his sense of humor: he basically stabbed everyone who ever voted for him in the back and dared anyone to do anything about it. And the news media doesn't mention the betrayal, only whether this will give the Senate the golden 60 votes.

5) Al Franken

This is probably the scariest thing I have heard in awhile. If Al Franken is awarded the seat from his state, he will be the coveted 60th vote in the Senate. This means Mr. Obama will have a Congress which can pass any and all of his projects without opposition. So, any close vote on any important policy for the United States will rest on the whim of a comedian. That isn't funny if you really think about it, but then again, why are we surprised at the way things happen to work in Washington.

6) I'm Sorry. So Sorry

Not funny per se, yet you have to love the way Mr. Obama apologizes for everything Mr. Bush (and almost every American) has ever done. He apologizes to the Iraqi people (why, I do not know), the leaders of Iran and Venezuela (why, I do not know), and is probably going to apologize to North Korea (why, I do not know). He has apologized so much for America it's a wonder the world still keeps us on maps. Actually, the world is pretty much indifferent to his apologies, I should think, since they are looking forward to what is in the best interest of their own countries. This is something Mr. Obama is also supposed to be doing, yet the angry left won't allow it. And, being a caring politician, he has to pander to them. Funny? Not really. Surprising? No . . . not really. And yet, we as Americans hear these apologies and wonder what the story is: what is he trying to accomplish? Whatever it is, we really just want him to represent America as a nation and not some small sliver of a special interest group. He's smart enough to realize not all interests are special, and very few of them require the federal government to intervene. He knows this, right?

Sure. And while I'm dreaming . . .

So. More fun from Washington. More to come, I am sure. At least we are sure of one thing:

We Americans sure like to laugh.
