The One And Only America

A group of men who didn't know the impact they would have on a world separated by ideology and
vast oceans and lands gathered together over two hundred years ago and declared in print one simple concept: Enough is enough.
They weren't 'founding fathers' then so much as just ordinary men doing something extraordinary. They declared independence from tyranny and oppression, both perceived and actual, and began something which has lasted two hundred and thirty-three years. The "shot heard 'round the world", ironically a shot from a British soldier (killing an American, Crispus Attus) was a starting gun in a world which knew definite class systems, religious opression (and denials), and a world in which one does not ask the question 'why'.
These men (and women), and those who followed and continued this independent drive, knew that question and many more. Not why, but why not? Not how, but when? These audacious Americans knew what they wanted and what it would take to get there. And they also knew, something which we in this time sometimes forget, it is a constant struggle - this yearning for freedom.
There have been many revolutions and many upheavals since then. Yet there is only one America, only one United States. And we, in this greatest of countries, have a legacy to uphold and a purpose to continue, something that goes beyond petty differences in party or thought, something that in the end will, as it must, bring us all together.
We are all Americans.

You're right, it never seems extraordinary or exceptional at the time, which is what makes it so astonishing. Perhaps those men and women from that time all believed they would hang for wanting independence, yet that was preferable to the alternative - to remain under the thumb of Great Britain. As they said at the time (I think it was either Franklin or Jefferson), 'we will hang together or we shall surely hang apart'.
