You Can't Escape

These days it seems you cannot escape politics. I would love to escape politics for at least one day, and yet try as I did, I couldn't. No matter where you turn you hear of healthcare, cash for clunkers, Lockerbie terrorists going home (it's the 'compassionate' thing to do, right?), and of course, how Mr. Obama is vacationing on Martha's Vineyard. The right decries this, saying that locale is probably the most left-leaning place in the country. Yet what of it? Mr. Obama is a very left-leaning politician, so it makes sense for him to go there, does it not? Mr. Bush, obviously very conservative, went to Crawford, which is probably the most-right you can go. So . . . is there a double-standard? Sure.
And yet, you say one thing negative about Mr. Obama and you are a racist, hater of liberty, a fascist, a gun-toting nazi, etc. Of course, it didn't help that some of these protesters brought guns to the meetings, but both sides have their share of nuts.
And please, before the emails and comments about bringing a gun to a town hall meeting: sure, the right is there and it's protected, yet doesn't bringing a gun to a town hall meeting make a statement all on it's own?
So, in the interest of getting a handle on all of this political shtuff, I thought it would be interesting to list some great quotations about politics through the years. They are in no particular order, yet they all have relevance about what we as a people are going through now. Here we go:
Bad politicians are sent to Washington by good people who don't vote.
William E. Simon
Conservative, n: A statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as distinguished from the Liberal who wishes to replace them with others.
Ambrose Bierce
He who knows how to flatter also knows how to slander.
Napoleon
If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all.
Noam Chomsky
In order to become the master, the politician poses as the servant.
Charles de Gaulle
Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks.
Doug Larson
It is not in the nature of politics that the best men should be elected. The best men do not want to govern their fellowmen.
George MacDonald
Suppose you were an idiot, and suppose you were a member of Congress; but I repeat myself.
Mark Twain
The good news is that, according to the Obama administration, the rich will pay for everything. The bad news is that, according to the Obama administration, you're rich.
P.J. O'Rourke
A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you have.
Barry Goldwater
Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.
P.J. O'Rourke
Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.
George Washington
And finally . . .
This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer.
Will Rogers

hi michael, isn't it a shame that for all time, there has been a distrust of our government, which in our minds, is supposed to protect and help us?"...doesn't bringing a gun to a town hall meeting make a statement all on it's own..." i don't think any reasonable person would expect to have an intelligent debate, while toting a 38, however, i know there are those who are qualified to carry a weapon, withought concern.i have no health insurance, so i'm anxious to see what will happen with that. up until now, raising children and taking care of a home for 25 years, hasn't counted to social security.and i want peace.i have too much at stake not to. the economy has forced my daughter to join the army, so she can provide for herself when she gets out, and the same for my son in the air force. they know what they face, in a second's notice, but they didn't feel they had any other options, and they are willing to serve if need be. 22 and 24. it's hard to believe, but we aren't rich, and didn't have money for expensive colleges.the only energy i have Faith in is God.May He help us,my best regards, sueThanks, Sue. Your faith in God will sustain you, regardless of the economy or hardship. That's the only energy you need. Thanks for reading and writing.
In my view a great general assessment and of course the quotes were outstanding--P. J. O'Rourke and Mark Twain were my favorites--funny stuff. Enjoyable reading! Thanks, Steve. I tried to find an objective balance since partisanship disgusts me, and hopefully I succeeded. Thanks for the comment and for reading.
Great article, Michael. Here's another quote;"The rich don't get rich and stay rich by giving their money away."I just made that up, but the sentiment is ageless.Great stuff here! Thanks, Ken. That's a good one, as is another about the wealthy: 'There's one born every minute'. Sure, it was PT Barnum, but it could be attributed to Mr. Madoff. Thanks for the read and comment.
