We Are All Haitians

Another beautiful day in America and yet it seems tempered somewhat, perhaps because of the ne
ws coming from our Caribbean neighbor. You cannot look at the carnage, the wholesale indiscriminate destruction, and not feel something.
The past few days have been trying for anyone and everyone in that poor country. Lawlessness and altruism fight for the front page, and every hour, every minute, another person is found alive. Or dead. Or dying. It is hard to imagine what living through something like this, in a place like that, can do to your outlook on life in general, and your life in particular.
Americans are once again doing what Americans always do: we put aside our differences and band together for a common cause. We do this not only because it's the right thing to do, but because it is in our national character. To help, to not think about the cost or the weight we might carry in the future, but to do what is needed now. That is who we are, and at this time during this disaster, we all can be proud to do whatever it takes to help the Haitian people. Whether it is contacting the Red Cross, donating online to the myriad of organizations tasked with this relief effort, or simply saying a silent prayer, we can help.
We are all Americans, and yet in this moment, during this time, we are all Haitians as well.

Well put facts regarding this human tragedy--and true of the American character--we shine when it comes to helping others.Yes we do, and yet we scroo it up when we try to help ourselves sometimes, don't we? Thanks as always.
Thanks, Michael, for writing about the Haitian tragedy. I really like your title. And like you said, Americans are doing once again what this nation has done many times: giving generously and massively to relieve the sufferings of others. ~mogama~Thank you, Mogama. It's a little late for us to help, but our help will be massive I believe. Thanks for reading and commenting, sir.
i know its terrible with the deathtoll, but Haiti has been in shambles for decades and has been in dire need of aid for years. Now all of a sudden the world cares? Yea that is nice, but the western world is just full of itself, jumping at the opportunity to look like the good guys. It is the poorest country in the western world and no one has looked at them until now. Its sad.You are absolutely right in that Haiti has needed help for generations. This tragedy is hopefully the stimulus other countries need to get off their arses and do something to help. And yes, it is sad it takes something like this. Thanks for your comment, sir.
Thanks Michael for this well-written compassionate article. Tonight, I was watching a miraculous event when American emergency responders were pulling out a woman alive, she was buried under the rubble for six days. Thanks for sharing this piece with us.Best to you and yours,~Nenita~And thanks to you for reading. Have a great one.
YES! My old Youth With a Mission roommate and her husband have lived in and worked in Haiti for I think over 20 years now. Thanks for spotlighting this and the response - I don't think we can have too many articles written!I don't either, although with the magnitude of this disaster finally coming to light, I don't think I can watch the news anymore. Thanks for stopping by.
