What Are They Really Looking At?

A beautiful day in America and I realized tonight on my way home that there is one thing in every community, every city and every state that is exactly the same. It doesn't matter if the neighborhood (or community) is rich, super-rich, poor, devastatingly-poor, middle-class, or whatever. It also doesn't matter where in the community or city this similarity exists, as there is really no demographic data showing this location is better than that location, this street is better than that one, etc.
My mind does some strange things when I drive, which is what happened tonight when I saw all of these birds. Driving in Austin is an adventure on a clear day, and here on the Friday before Valentine's Day it is truly nerve-shattering. Regardless, when I saw those birds I instantly realized what they're doing. What they're really doing.
You see, we go about our lives in our own way, with our own steady pace, always hoping for a better tomorrow, or at least a better day after tomorrow. We work, we eat, we sleep, we shake our heads at the radio or television when some celebrity does something idiotic, we grumble when some politician (or group of politicians) does something idiotic, and we of course go into orbit when anything happens to shatter our perception of our country. Left or Right, we all, in our way, are Americans and I believe deep down we all (again, in our own way) try to honor and serve our country in any way we can.
Bailouts of one kind or another, government intervention to create jobs (or in this particular case The Stimulus: The Sequel), power-grabs by administrations, political sqabbling, celebrity scandals, right versus left . . . all of these things, or some variation of them, have been happening for a long time in our history. We don't know any better, or if we do, we don't know how to get there - to that better - from where we are right now.
The birds, however, seem to know. They eat, they sleep, they sit on wires and watch us go about our lives as we watch ants. Perhaps the birds get bored, as we would watching ants, and in that boredom they talk quietly amongst themselves. They might say things such as this: "That's a Prius? Nice car, too bad it can't stop", or "Did you see that bumper sticker? What does 'Don't Hope, Just Change' mean?". Or what birds are probably talking about right now: "So there was a terrible earthquake in Haiti where thousands lost their lives, right? Can people really pretend things like this don't bother them? Would they rather watch some 'real' housewives or something called American Idol? Apparently so . . .".
We are so smart. We're at the top of the food chain. And yet, in the end, I think the birds spread out on a telephone wire near you will have the last laugh. Sure, they're looking. But what are they really looking at?
Do we really want to know?

Top-level comments on this article: (5 total)I believe those birds are saying "those humans are really crazy, aren't they?"You may be right about that!
Yeah, I used to wonder what all those birds were thinking about--they're probably all laughing at us goofballs--interesting article--I'll have to watch Hitchcocks movie tthe Birds again...That's a great movie, yet those birds were aggressive to the extreme. The birds spread out on a telephone wire are just sitting there, watching. Maybe one day they too will get agressive and arrange a mass dropping on some unsuspecting car.
I always thought they were bragging. Like, "Yea, when I was a youngster I could chase down a car like that and spray my name on the windshied."Yeah, I can definitely imagine that. Thanks for stopping by, Ken.
Michael--the mass dropping on an unsuspecting car occurs regularly on my white Mustang. I enjoyed your article! Thanks. Maybe that's what the birds are thinking: planning their next assault.
Hi Michael.I really enjoyed this. Never thought about the birds that way. And yeah, you're right about it all.Hugs,DianneThanks as always for reading and commenting. Funny the things we think of, yes?
