Are You Alive?

Another beautiful day in America and you sit there reading these words, alive and aware, and you are thinking something completely different than me. You read these words, and those from others, with something else on your mind. Perhaps you think of the things you have to do later today, or the bills you have to pay. Perhaps you think of current events and wonder about Congress and what's next for our country. Perhaps you think of your boss or lover or parents or children and wonder what they will do next which will impact your life.
We are all alive, and yet sometimes it might feel we are merely passing the time. We eat, sleep, work, laugh, love, and eventually, for those who aren't immortal, die. We do all of these things with the knowledge we constantly strive for something better, something beyond our grasp. We might never reach it, yet we will reach as long as we are able.
We are alive. Remember that to be alive you have to be aware and have to have that reach. It might be for something impossible, might even be for something everyone thinks is not worth the effort, but reach nonetheless. Otherwise, you are just a cog in society's machine, a battery providing a little power to something bigger than you and something that you cannot ever hope to control.
Are you alive? Of course you are. Time to live . . .

More commentsMy wife is currently pregnant and due on monday. As I sit next to her and feel this unborn child move it reminds me that I am alive and soon a little one will be to. That my life essence has passed on to another and soon I wlll be holding this one marveling how we are all alive.Congratulations! Alive and aware you are, as is the little one soon to experience life. Well done to both of you, and all the best.
"Remember that to be alive you have to be aware and have to have that reach." True words, Michael. I take "aware" to be consciousness, and "that reach" to be hope, an e expectation of the better. In one line you have defined life in such a succinct way, and I find that simply brilliant. ~mogama~Thank you so much. It is hard to remember through all of our daily chaff we are truly alive and should take the time to act it. Thanks again, sir.
I particularly like the last line. Time to live. I agree everyday is a time to live and to the fullest. Thanks for sharing Michael. And thanks for reading and commenting. I truly appreciate your input.
It is indeed "time to live!" That is exactly the motivation I had for jumping careers.Good stuff here, Michael!Thank you Ken. We should all embrace life now, while we can. The worst thing is to say one day, 'I could have' because it might sometimes be 'I should have.' Thanks again, sir!
