Things That Should Not Happen

For some reason this morning I started thinking of some other things that shouldn't happen which, sadly, happen all of the time. These are in no particular order, yet these things happen without fail and we the American people either allow it, or condone it.
Driving By The Homeless: That's right, every day in every city we Americans drive right by these invisible people. Sometimes, all too rarely, we toss a quarter or a dollar. Most often we ignore these helpless people. Yesterday I gave a banana to one at the corner (I was returning from the grocery store) and the man looked at it as though it was about to attack him. 'It's good for you,' I said, driving away. In my rear-view mirror I saw him look at the banana, then watched as he tossed it on the ground.
Selling America By The Dollar: True, we blame politicians and the rich, yet it all boils down to we the people. We like to complain about the lack of products 'Made in America', and yet we are driven to find the cheapest products on the shelf. Walmart is a natural whipping post, yet it is the most successful (success meaning profits) retailer on the planet. And we the people continue to support it. We want cheap products, or rather, we want good, cheap products, not realizing we cannot have it both ways. And yet, we continue.
Congressional Deals: This has been going on since the very beginning of this country, yet lately we've heard much vitriol about back-room deals and bribes. No, it shouldn't happen, even though both parties are guilty. It matters not who does it most (or worst), just as it doesn't matter who lies the most: both should strive for transparency and honesty.
Profiling: This also has been happening for years, yet lately it has become almost impossible to turn on the television or read a newspaper (they still have them, strangely) without being bombarded by tea-party-goers all being labeled as racist, democrats all being labeled as socialists or anarchists, etc. Sad how we the people not only have bought into these lies, we perpetuate them by repeating the party-line: a democrat wants health-care, he's a socialist. A tea-partier carries an American flag, he's a racist. Enough already. We know better.
It all boils down to what we'll allow. We have more power than we realize, and yet we like to play the helpless 'people' who point fingers at 'them' who are doing 'this' or saying 'that'. We know better, I am certain. Is it our elected representatives who need a wake-up call?
Or should we just cut the nonsense and look in the mirror?

Top-level comments on this article: (1 total)Fantastic article Michael. I agree wholeheartedly. The helpless feeling people have is mainly because so many do not choose to speak up for fear of being rediculed, that their voice doesn't matter or worse. Many of the ones who do "speak up" do so in a manner that makes matters worse. There are ways to empower oneself and others and that is by writing. Writing is one of the best ones. Not in an aggressive, angry way but in a way that actually would result in "both sides" wishing to see and hear what one wishes to convey, even if they disagree. If Freedom of Speech is not given vent to now, soon the day may come when one finds that right censored or totally negated. While the people "sleep" so much is going on behind closed doors. While they argue and bicker laws are being passed that will leave these very same people feeling angry and tricked.BlessingsThanks so much for reading and commenting.
