They're Out To Get You, Aren't They?

Last week we had a pretty severe storm that passed through Austin. Power lines went down, power went out, and the city came to a virtual standstill for hours. I remember driving home from work through the storm and was glad to see the police had blocked off certain roads that would prove impassible. I was also glad to see emergency crews working through the storm to restore power - the same crews who are the 'they' when you say during a blackout, 'they're working on it.'
When Mr. Bush was in office, he and they were going to take away our rights, open the borders to anyone and everyone, and basically ignore our will. With Mr. Obama in office, he and they are going to take away our rights, open the borders to anyone and everyone, and basically ignore our will. And yet, when the storms come, when Mother Nature asserts herself (as she tends to do from time to time), they are who we turn to for assistance or guidance.
And yet, they're out to get us. Really. Just listen to every ultra right-wing (and ultra left-wing, don't kid yourself) person with a microphone or television show and you know it to be true.
If they're really out to get us, why help in times of trouble? 9/11, Katrina, even the recent gas explosion outside of San Francisco. Why help? Sure, there are many questions surrounding each of those events (why was the response so quick for 9/11, why did it take almost a week for FEMA to get water in quantity to the Superdome, and how could a whole street just explode like that?), yet if they were really out to get us, wouldn't there be a 'sorry, can't help' or 'that's a state problem, you're on your own' attitude?
Some other examples:
They are after your money: Of course, this means the government is in bed with Wall Street and the banks, right? Many people think this is true since the bank bailout (the right has believed it since introduction of the Federal Reserve System), yet they are determined to get your money. If this is true, why tax us to begin with? Why not just take it?
They are after your identity: This means the government is in bed with Google, Microsoft and AT & T. Granted, telecommunication companies have always been in bed with the government (because of national security), yet if Google and Microsoft and others are included, what's the point? Your identity is already known to the government, and if they really wanted to know everything about you, it would probably be easiest to just ask. That might not fit the perception of Big Brother, yet remember the government cannot afford to run itself without your consent, so again, why bother?
Then again, the government isn't doing a very good job at running itself at the moment, but you see what I mean.
They are after your guns: This means the government is one step away from knocking on your door and taking your firearms. This presupposes that the Bill of Rights has been repealed (it hasn't) and that the government has decided to go to war with the one entity it cannot ever defeat (it's own people). There are so many Americans with guns this idea of the government confiscating them all is kind of like grabbing a handful of water from a rushing stream. The more you try to hold on to it, the more it leaks through. There are a great many (mostly on the right) who say the government takeover of your guns is imminent, yet don't believe the hype: your rights are safe.
They are after your mind: This means the government has invented a way to control your brain, and unless they have cornered the market on bad television programming (to which many seem to be addicted), this one is completely false.
They aren't out to get you. Sure, there are many times they screw up, and many times we would be better off if they would listen to us instead of those from who they take bribes (sorry, I mean lobbyists). But they aren't out to get you. Really.
The aliens from outer space, however: that's another story altogether . . .

Good article, Michael! And people who point fingers at "the government" are suspiciously reluctant to look at how they personally have contributed to the mess that government has to clean up!Not only that, but fail to offer any real solutions. Blame is the game today, I wonder what it will be tomorrow? Thanks very much.
"They aren't out to get you. Sure, there are many times they screw up, and many times we would be better off if they would listen to us instead of those from who they take bribes (sorry, I mean lobbyists). But they aren't out to get you. Really." I loved this paragraph! And the ending. And the beginning. Heck I liked the whole thing. Maybe those aliens are putting paranoia pills in our water and it's a conspiracy they are hatching.GraceDon't underestimate the power of those from other planets. They've come all of this way, so they must have something . . . interesting in mind. Of course I'm joking, yet at this moment I am sure there are some hunkered down with the aluminum foil on the windows with their ham radios tuned to space.Wow. For all of you paranoids out there, I look forward to your comments about that. Thanks as always for reading and commenting.
You are very right sir. Its a well written article. Sometimes its necessary to stand beside 'them' also. Thanks very much for reading and commenting. You are right.
Article of truth, especially now as it nears election time, the voices will only get louder. I think we really need to be careful right now because with the elections so near you will hear the voices crying so loud they won't need any kind of communication device. We must wear ear muffs at all times for our own protection. Good article Micheal.I spent yesterday afternoon trying to watch the news. CNN was okay, kind of balanced; FOX was getting annoying with their 'News Alerts' and it was all commentary without much substance; MSNBC was the worst of the lot in that their main mission these days seems to be to sling the mud. I finally settled on the impreachment trial of judge Porteus on CSPAN-3, which was awesome. Gotta tell ya, for unvarnished and completely objective news, CSPAN wins hands down.Too bad they aren't as flashy as the others as we would all be better served watching news from Washington on CSPAN than listending to the mindless blame-games from the cable networks..Thanks for reading and commenting. I appreciate it.
Finally someone who could figure out who "they" are. Great article. Thanks very much for reading and the comment. I'm sure they appreciate it as well.
They really liked your article. Hey what a minute, that's me!And they thank you very much.
Nice Michael. The truth is we're such a convoluted bunch, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. Why the heck would they even want us? Well. I guess the lobbyist comment answers that question. :)Thanks sir, for the response. I agree, they're damned either way.
